Kuranda North Queensland
Kuranda Butterfly Sanctuary This 3,666 cubic metre
aviary is home to over 1500 magnificent butterflies, all local to the area,
including the electric blue Ulysses butterfly and the largest butterfly in
Australia, the Australian Birdwing. The aviary was opened in 1987 and has
been visited by over a million people since. The butterfly's beguiling aerial
dances, their tendency to land on brightly coloured clothing, has inspired and
delighted young and old alike. As part of the entry price, an optional guided
tour is offered. The tour, which is presented in a relaxed and informal way,
gives many insights into the behavioural patterns and the life cycle of these
winsome insects.
Rainforestation Nature Park At Rainforestation Nature
Park, visitors can experience Australian nature and Aboriginal culture in one
convenient setting. The 100 hectare (40 acre) tourist attraction is on the
coastal range behind Cairns, amidst World Heritage tropical rainforest, and only
five minutes from Kuranda. Rainforestation's famous 30 seat Army Ducks run
amphibious tours through the tropical rainforest, while experienced
driver/guides explain the features of the surrounding forest. Tour sheets are
available in English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian,
Japanese, Korean, Malay, Spanish, Swedish and Thai. The Pamagirri Aboriginal
Experience introduces visitors to several aspects of traditional Aboriginal
culture. In their rainforest amphitheatre the Pamagirri Dancers perform an
exciting and powerful corroboree of traditional Aboriginal dances, accompanied
by didgeridoo and clapsticks. Again, programs are available in 13 languages. On
the Dreamtime Walk, the Pamagirri guides teach visitors to throw boomerang,
demonstrate spear-throwing and explain the didgeridoo. The Pamagirri Cultural
Centre, which resembles a large outback shed, features examples of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Island huts and shelters, plus original art and artefacts. In
the ever-expanding Koala and Wildlife Park, raised platforms provide great views
of the koalas, wombats, crocodiles (including five metre Jack the Ripper),
snakes, wallabies and kangaroos. Guests can be photographed with a cute young
koala. Two shops sell a wide range of Australian souvenirs and clothing plus
Aboriginal artefacts and paintings. Delicious barbecue lunches, mini-meals and
snacks are served in the licensed Colonial and Outback Restaurants. The
restaurants are ideal for themed dinner functions.
